The Role of Probiotics in Oral Health

Probiotics are live microorganisms that provide health benefits when administered in adequate amounts. Although they are most commonly associated with digestive health, growing evidence suggests they may also play an important role in maintaining oral health. The oral cavity contains a diverse community of microorganisms known as the oral microbiome, and maintaining a healthy balance of these bacteria is essential for preventing oral diseases. As research into the oral microbiome expands, probiotics are being investigated as a promising addition to preventive dental care (Rastogi et al., 2011). 


An imbalance in the oral microbiome, known as dysbiosis, can contribute to conditions such as dental caries, periodontal disease, and halitosis (Karbalaei et al., 2021). Certain probiotic strains, including Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium, may help restore microbial balance by competing with harmful bacteria for nutrients and adhesion sites and by producing substances that inhibit their growth (Inchingolo et al., 2023). In addition, probiotics may help regulate the body’s immune response, thereby reducing inflammation associated with periodontal disease (Teughels et al., 2011).


Current research suggests that probiotics may reduce plaque accumulation, improve gingival health, and lower levels of cariogenic bacteria, including Streptococcus mutans (Rastogi et al., 2011). Some studies have also shown that probiotics can reduce halitosis by limiting the growth of bacteria that produce unpleasant odours (Karbalaei et al., 2021). While these findings are encouraging, probiotics should be considered an adjunct to, not a replacement for, good oral hygiene practices, including regular brushing, flossing, and professional dental care. Further long-term clinical studies are needed to determine the most effective probiotic strains, dosages, and delivery methods for oral health applications (Inchingolo et al., 2023).


The use of probiotics in dentistry is an exciting area of emerging research. By supporting a balanced oral microbiome, probiotics may help reduce the risk of common oral diseases and promote overall oral health. Although additional research is needed before probiotics become a routine part of dental care, current evidence suggests they may be a valuable tool in preventive dentistry. As our understanding of the oral microbiome continues to grow, probiotics may play an increasingly important role in maintaining both oral and overall health (Inchingolo et al., 2023).
