Microplastics and Oral Health: An Emerging Concern

Plastic pollution has become one of the most pressing environmental issues worldwide, with growing concern surrounding the presence of microplastics in everyday life. Microplastics are plastic particles smaller than five millimeters that originate from the breakdown of larger plastic products or are intentionally manufactured for commercial use. These particles have been detected in drinking water, seafood, packaged foods, and even the air we breathe, making human exposure nearly unavoidable. Because the oral cavity is the primary entry point for food and beverages, it is also one of the first areas exposed to microplastics. Although research is still emerging, scientists are beginning to investigate how these particles may affect oral tissues, contribute to inflammation, and influence long-term oral health.
One reason microplastics have become an important area of research is their potential interaction with the oral environment. As food and beverages pass through the mouth, microplastic particles may come into direct contact with the teeth, gums, saliva, and oral microbiome. Current research suggests that these particles can accumulate on oral surfaces and may promote oxidative stress and inflammation within surrounding tissues. Researchers are also investigating whether microplastics can disrupt the balance of beneficial bacteria in the mouth, potentially increasing the risk of oral diseases such as gingivitis and periodontitis. While additional studies are needed to fully understand these effects, early findings indicate that the oral cavity may serve as an important site for understanding how environmental pollutants influence human health (D'Amico et al).
Beyond their potential effects on oral tissues, microplastics also highlight the expanding role of dentistry in promoting overall health. Dentists are increasingly recognizing that oral health is influenced by more than brushing and flossing alone. Environmental exposures, dietary habits, and lifestyle factors may all contribute to oral disease risk. As research continues to evolve, dental professionals can help educate patients about emerging health concerns while continuing to emphasize evidence-based preventive care. Although completely avoiding microplastics may not be possible, simple strategies such as reducing the use of single-use plastics, choosing reusable water bottles, and maintaining excellent oral hygiene may help minimize potential risks while research continues to develop. The World Health Organization also emphasizes that further investigation is needed to better understand the health effects of long-term microplastic exposure in humans (World Health Organization, 2019).
Microplastics represent a relatively new area of scientific investigation, yet they demonstrate how environmental health and oral health are becoming increasingly interconnected. While many questions remain unanswered, current research suggests that these particles may contribute to inflammation and alter the oral environment in ways that could influence overall health. As scientists continue to study their biological effects, dentists will play an important role in educating patients, promoting preventive care, and staying informed about emerging environmental health risks. Understanding the relationship between microplastics and oral health not only expands the scope of dentistry but also reinforces the importance of protecting health beyond the teeth alone.
